Cornish Doorways

Inspired by the Cornish Philanthropist John Passmore Edwards, who believed in ordinary people and gave us so many of our libraries and other cherished public buildings, ‘Cornish Doorways’ was a major arts and heritage project celebrating inclusivity and enabling participants to build new skills and create site specific performances and arts events in Cornwall. It has just finished so do read on to learn more about what we did on this wonderful project.
Many thank to all our supporters and funders.

John Passmore Edwards

 an extraordinary Cornish Philanthropist.
Dean Evans gave a wonderful talk about his life and work, to the company at Blackwater Village Hall. They  have researched and developed work from his inspiration to be performed at Falmouth Library and others throughout the county.

Title was inspired by Passmore Edwards saying: "Fund the ladder the poor will climb it themselves" and his autobiography 'A Few Footprints.
'

Shallal pop-ups visited venues in North and East Cornwall in March 2016 to promote the project and build audiences.
A new group started at the Liskerett Centre, Liskeard September 2016.

Research into Passmore Edwards and the libraries included a trip to Falmouth and Truro Library and dancing on the steps of Newlyn Art Gallery. Dancing on the steps in front of the old doorway was filmed and incorporated into Newyln Art week thanks to Rotary Funding, and Tea Party with Shallal entertainment was held at The Centre, Newlyn 7 October 2016

Lauren Reid has worked with Eddie ( and Kyle Coleman), see her work here http://www.understanding-autism.com/  and http://laurenreid22.tumblr.com/
Eddie invited her along and she kindly took some photographs and backstage portraits of some of the 25 characters in the show.

These were taken over the winter and spring at Godolphin House in research and development phase.
The younger dancers and some others responded: to the place, each other and danced and played.
(We laugh and play a lot, it lets us access different emotions and have fun and gives confidence to take risks.)

They were on show in The Cidery for 2 weeks over the performance time.
They will be in our final exhibition and are currently on view in the foyer of Gyllyngdune Gardens, Falmouth for July 2017.  Thanks to Jacqui Owen and Belinda Whiting, and PDSW original funding.
